Take our Kids to Work Day

Grade 9 students all around the province of BC participated in Canada’s 18th annual Take our Kids to Work, the Learning Partnership’s signature program.  British Hydraulics had the opportunity to host Terry Fox Secondary student, Connor.  Connor has decided to follow a career in Aircraft Maintenance after he graduates, and his day spent in the hydraulic shop confirmed that decision.  He sent a thank you saying “It let me try what I wanted in my career and I loved it”.  Connor spent the day helping out, cleaning some of the equipment and finished the day working in the office with his Mom.  He learned that he definitely doesn’t like bookkeeping!

British Hydraulics operations manager Melanie Balletta says it feels great to have hosted the annual fundraiser, which for four years running has donated the money raised to local charities helping children. Melanie learned of the BC Centre for Ability through her friend Darlána Mancuso, known as the Get it Done Diva (http://getitdonediva.com/), whose daughter has received services from BCCFA.

Franco and Melanie’s son was diagnosed with a brain stem tumor when he was three years old and given 24 hours to live. That night, now 22-year-old Frankie celebrated that he’s been cancer free for 19 years.

“Having a child with a disability makes you aware of importance of raising funds”, says Melanie Balletta.
